From Partnership to Action: EBC’s Renewed Commitment to United to Beat Malaria and 5K Run Support

As we mark World Malaria Day 2025, the theme "Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite" serves as a powerful reminder of the global fight against one of the world’s deadliest yet preventable diseases. EBC Financial Group (EBC) is once again stepping up, solidifying our role as a committed partner in the United to Beat Malaria campaign. This year marks our second anniversary in this global partnership, and we are scaling our efforts with an even stronger commitment to advocacy, awareness, and action. Taking Action in the Fight Against Malaria At the heart of this renewed commitment is EBC’s active participation in the 2025 Move Against Malaria 5K. This year, EBC is not just participating but proudly stepping forward as a first-time corporate sponsor. The virtual 5K event runs from April 25 to May 10 and invites people worldwide to walk, run, cycle, or engage in any form of movement to raise awareness and funds for malaria prevention. Over 200 EBC employees from the UK, Asia, Africa, and Latin America are mobilising to join this global challenge, reinforcing the message that malaria eradication is a cause we can all support. David Barrett, CEO of EBC Financial Group (UK) Ltd, aptly summarised our approach: “In 2024, we stood in solidarity. In 2025, we stand in action. This campaign is now embedded into our leadership strategy and employee culture. This is not a moment, it’s a movement.” A Shared Vision for Global Health EBC’s ongoing involvement goes beyond corporate sponsorship—it’s a shared mission for global health equity. This commitment is deeply personal for us, especially as we operate across regions that are disproportionately affected by malaria, including Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Malaria is not just a health issue; it’s an economic and workforce issue that affects communities where we work. “We have offices in Africa, Latin America, and Asia where malaria is a very real, on-ground problem. Supporting this campaign is a natural progression, resonating with our people and the communities we work in,” said Barrett. “At the beginning, it was something of interest. But the more you learn about the lives this movement has saved, the more you realise you’ve got to keep going.” Margaret McDonnell, Executive Director of United to Beat Malaria, echoed the importance of the private sector’s involvement, saying, “We appreciate that a company like EBC—though not in public health—recognises the impact of malaria on your workforce, clients, and communities. Malaria isn’t just a health issue. It’s an economic issue, a workforce issue, and a strategic global issue.” Advocacy at the Heart of Change March 2025 saw EBC’s continued commitment in action at the United to Beat Malaria Annual Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. David Barrett and Samuel Hertz, EBC’s APAC Director of Operations, joined over 120 global advocates to push for policy changes. This culminated in meetings with U.S. Congress members to advocate for the full funding of key malaria initiatives such as the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Global Fund. “What stood out most was the passion of the Champions,” said Barrett. “From students to scientists, their energy is contagious. They’re not just learning—they’re leading. And that gives me hope that a healthier, more just world is truly possible.” Strategic Investments in Frontline Health EBC is committed to more than just advocacy; we’re investing directly in life-saving interventions. Our contributions include insecticide-treated bed nets, rapid diagnostic tests, and antimalarial treatments aimed at supporting frontline health programs in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. “This partnership goes beyond corporate philanthropy, it reflects a shared mission to protect the world’s most vulnerable populations,” said McDonnell. EBC’s efforts are aligned with our broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies, recognising that sustainable growth is inseparable from global health and well-being. Moving Forward Together In 2024, United to Beat Malaria protected over 1.67 million people from malaria across vulnerable communities worldwide, a feat made possible with the support of partners like EBC Financial Group. However, the battle is far from over. According to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report 2024, malaria still sickened an estimated 263 million people and caused the deaths of over 597,000, most of them children under five. The need for continued action remains urgent. These are lives we can save with sustained global action, collaboration, and support from companies like EBC. Together, we can end malaria once and for all.
